When Mike first tries to understand a problem, he breaks it down for himself into its fundamental principles. Sometimes the solution requires a mathematical or scientific breakdown. At other times, especially when the problem is a creative one, Mike employs keen, step-by-step, self-observation.
Once he breaks down the problem and grasps the fundamentals, Mike can think his way through various scenarious to come up with different solutions. This makes him much better able to teach and explain.
