Light & The Landscape
Landscape Photography Workshop
LEVEL: Intermediate & Advanced Photographers
(View Course Requirements)
This in-field hands-on photography class addresses three variations of light that are used to photograph the landscape: diffuse, soft sunlight, and glancing light. The latter is the most exciting when the sun is just above the horizon, causing a dramatic combination of highlight and shadow to make subjects explode off the page. Light and shadows become subjects unto themselves, guiding the composition and the eye. The photo to the right shows how glancing sunlit subjects are lifted off the screen, creating a 3-dimensional effect through the careful use of light and shadow. OPEN
After years of observing and analyzing his own actions in the field, Mike has developed short simple steps for getting the shot. This includes solving challenging exposure situations and the use of split grad filters.
The goal of the class is to set you on the road toward making perfect landscape exposures in any given situation. Because, no matter how creative you are, it makes no difference if you can't technically bring home the shot.
The workshop focuses on the fundamentals and therefore has no bearing on whether you shoot 35mm film, large format, or use a digital camera. However, you are required to be FULLY FAMILIAR with your camera's operation, in particular, manual exposure and spot metering.
During the evening of the first day, an indoor class lecture and discussion is held to familiarize you with the techniques and fundamentals. On day two, we meet in an outdoor setting for hands-on field instruction to put into practice what you learned. We will start in the late afternoon and stay past sunset in order to photograph in all three lighting situations.
Seven days after the field days is automatically reserved as the rain date. So, please also reserve this day on your calendar.
COURSE AGENDA
The initial session take place at Mike's home and studio in Downers Grove, Illinois (a Chicago suburb) on Friday evening. You will receive a presentation that will teach you the various fundamentals and techniques. After this indoor class, there will be a discussion.
On the following day, Saturday, we will meet at a nearby location in the late afternoon to practice and employ these techniques.
In the field, you will be taught and guided as you take pictures using the techniques that you learned in the classroom. The session will last until about 30 to 45 minutes after sunset.
The class will be limited to a small number of participants so you can get the attention you require. The cutoff will be somewhere between 6 and 8 students depending on the experience level of the participants. So, please register quickly to insure a spot.
